The Greatest Burden of Zoonoses Falls on One Billion Poor Livestock Keepers. An International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) study has shown that zoonotic diseases are major obstacles in the pathway out of poverty for one billion poor livestock keepers. These diseases cause 2.3 billion cases of human illness and 1.7 million human deaths a year. In poor countries, they infect more than one in seventh of all livestock animals every year[5].
